Why NYC & Long Island Building Owners Choose MJI Energy for Building Automation

October 27, 2025 · 4 min read · MJI Energy Insights

When you're evaluating building automation contractors in New York City or Long Island, you'll find no shortage of options. Large national firms with local offices. Regional integrators. Equipment manufacturers with their own service arms. Independent controls contractors. The choices can be overwhelming — and the distinctions between them are not always obvious from a company website.

Here's a candid look at what differentiates MJI Energy, and why those differences matter for your building.

Niagara-Certified, One of Few Woman-Owned in the Northeast

MJI Energy is a certified Niagara integrator — meaning our engineers have passed the rigorous Tridium certification process and are qualified to design, install, and program Niagara Framework-based systems at the enterprise level. This is not a manufacturer dealership or a reseller arrangement. We are a full systems integrator, writing custom logic, configuring workflows, and deploying supervisory platforms from the ground up.

We are also one of a small number of woman-owned building automation firms in the Northeast. This matters for building owners and property managers pursuing diversity spend targets, navigating M/WBE requirements for city-funded projects, or simply looking to support more diverse vendor pools in the trades.

Johnson Controls Trained

Our team includes engineers and technicians trained by Johnson Controls, one of the global leaders in building automation technology. That training background means our staff understands both the systems we install and the legacy JCI equipment that exists in thousands of New York commercial buildings — an important advantage when we're integrating new controls with existing infrastructure.

30+ Years of Combined Experience in the New York Market

Building automation in New York is not the same as building automation in Phoenix or Houston. The building stock is older and more varied. Mechanical systems range from steam to chilled water to packaged rooftop units, often within the same building. Local code requirements, ConEd rate structures, PSEG Long Island demand programs, and NYC Local Law 97 compliance create a regulatory context that requires specific expertise.

Our team has 30-plus years of combined experience working in this market. We've commissioned systems in Midtown Manhattan office towers, Nassau County medical facilities, mixed-use properties in Brooklyn, and multifamily buildings on Long Island. That breadth of experience translates into faster troubleshooting, more accurate project scoping, and fewer surprises during installation.

Systems Integrators, Not Product Resellers

There is a meaningful difference between a systems integrator and a product reseller, and building owners should understand it before hiring a controls contractor.

A product reseller is primarily in the business of selling a specific manufacturer's equipment. Their recommendations will naturally favor that manufacturer's product line, whether or not it's the best fit for your building. Their service capabilities are often limited to that product family, and if you ever want to switch vendors or add equipment from a different manufacturer, you may be starting over.

A systems integrator like MJI Energy is product-agnostic. We design systems based on your building's requirements, selecting field hardware, controllers, and software that best match the application. We work with Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Distech, Automated Logic, and other manufacturers — choosing what's right for the job, not what moves product from our warehouse.

Open-Protocol Systems That Don't Lock You In

Every system MJI Energy installs uses open, industry-standard protocols — primarily BACnet/IP, with Modbus and LonWorks integration where existing equipment requires it. This means:

  • Any qualified Niagara-certified contractor can service your system if your needs change or you want to re-bid your service contract
  • New equipment from any manufacturer can be integrated without replacing your existing platform
  • You own your data — your historical trends, your alarm logs, your energy data — without being dependent on a vendor portal to access it

Proprietary systems that require you to return to a single vendor for every service call, software update, or expansion are a liability over a 10–15 year horizon. We build systems designed to outlast the relationship with any particular contractor, including us.

Local Presence, Fast Response

MJI Energy is based in the New York metro area. Our service technicians are available for on-site response across New York City and Long Island without the coordination overhead of dispatching from a regional hub in New Jersey or Connecticut. For facilities with after-hours alarms, occupied spaces, or compliance-critical systems, response time matters.

We also provide remote monitoring services, allowing our team to identify and often resolve issues before they require a truck roll. But when on-site work is needed, we're close.

End-to-End: From Assessment Through Ongoing Monitoring

Some contractors sell equipment. Some sell service contracts. MJI Energy does both, which matters because a building automation system is not a product you buy — it's an ongoing operational tool that requires programming updates, seasonal commissioning, and continuous tuning to perform at its potential.

Our services span the full lifecycle: initial energy and controls assessments, system design, installation and commissioning, operator training, and ongoing remote monitoring and preventive maintenance. Building owners who engage us for the full scope get a system that improves over time rather than degrading, and a team that understands the history of their building when something needs attention.

If you're evaluating automation contractors for a new project, a legacy upgrade, or ongoing service, we're glad to have a direct conversation about your building. Reach out to MJI Energy — we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right fit.
